Brewing a New Look: Prairie Malt’s Bold Refresh

Liam also highlights the advantages of Prairie Malt being part of Boortmalt, a global malting company with extensive reach and infrastructure. This connection allows Prairie to offer a wide catalog of over 60 malts while keeping costs down through a streamlined, internal supply chain. Customers benefit from this efficiency, especially during times of international instability, with consistent pricing and reliable access to high-quality malts sourced globally.
Looking ahead, Prairie Malt is expanding its catalog with several exciting new offerings, including German Vienna and Munich malts, and a Czech-inspired “Bohemian Rhapsody” pilsner malt. These additions cater to brewers looking to innovate and differentiate their products in a maturing craft beer market. For those interested in sampling these new malts or learning more, visit prairiemalt.com or follow @prairiemalt on Instagram to stay connected and request samples.

Speaker 1 [00:04] For 50 years, Prairie Malt has been malting in one of North America's premier growing regions. Joining me to share what's new at Prairie Malt is Liam Colford, regional craft manager for North America. Thanks for being here, Liam.
Speaker 2 [00:17] Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 [00:18] So Liam, Prairie Malt has undergone a big evolution with a new look, new logos, new packaging, a refreshed website. Why did y'all go so big with the refresh?
Speaker 2 [00:29] Yeah, that's a good question. Really, we felt like, as is the case for a lot of ingredient companies in particular, uh, not to mention anybody specifically, there's a, there's a big emphasis always on, you know, quality and heritage and history and all of those kinds of things, um, and that's all well and good, but sometimes it can feel a little bit stale maybe or a little bit, um, like wallpaper, yeah, yeah, a little, uh, a little like wallpaper, so. Uh, and then on, on the brewery side of things, almost every craft brewery is injected with a lot of, uh, color and personality, um, sometimes, you know, even humor, style, all of those kinds of things. So, we thought that it would be a good idea to try and rebrand the company, to try and inject some of that personality into, uh, into the branding. I think, uh, most of the people who work for us on the sales side are pretty gregarious individuals, as, as salespeople tend to be in the beer industry, especially. So we really wanted to kind of reflect, um, you know, the personality type of the people who work here and try to kind of meet our customers, uh, in the way that they market themselves.
Speaker 1 [01:36] And for the folks who are watching, I imagine you are decked out in the gear right now.
Speaker 2 [01:40] Yes, absolutely, yeah, so we have, uh, 5 different, uh, t-shirts, uh, that we've introduced at CBC this year, uh, 5 different hat designs, we're calling it our, our summer catalog. So it's been a lot of fun and uh yeah, again, and breweries are do such a great job of, of, you know, making t-shirts and hoodies and all that kind of stuff so uh we wanted to do the same.
Speaker 1 [02:04] Yeah, it's very cool. I like the PD's House of Pilsner. Yeah, that's a cool logo which you done by Stout Collective.
Speaker 2 [02:11] Yes, shout out to our friends from Stout Collective.
Speaker 1 [02:14] Well, Prairie is with Boortmalt, and there are a lot of advantages of being with Boortmalt. Can you run down some of those things for us?
Speaker 2 [02:21] Bort Malt is, uh, one of the largest, uh, malt companies in the world. Um, we have. Uh, almost 30 malt plants in 16 different countries on all five continents. Uh, we're a malt company that makes malt, and that's it. So there's, there's no, uh, you know, sugars or anything like that. By having such a global reach, um, we're able to import malts from all over the world. Um, so we have a catalog of over 60 different malts, and whenever we import things instead of Um, uh, like some competitors who maybe have to buy from a third party, and there's a markup on that sale, and then they obviously have to sell it for a profit. Whenever we're importing things, we're just buying it from ourselves, so we get to keep our costs really low, and, you know, just the logistics and, and shipping and inventorying and all of those things are really streamlined just because it's one kind of single supply chain, so. That's been really advantageous. Um, I think our customers get to take advantage of that too, usually with some attractive pricing, and, uh, especially in the world we live in now where, you know, tariffs and uh turmoil around the globe, uh, it's really nice to feel like we have a really good understanding of what's going on in, in every region.
Speaker 1 [03:33] That's really going to help you shape your costs,
Speaker 2 [03:35] right? Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1 [03:37] So within the world of malt right now, what's hot? What are brewers after, you know, what, what are the things that folks need to know and be on the lookout for?
Speaker 2 [03:46] You know, I think especially now that the industry is maybe not as, uh, you know, strong as it was with double digit percentage growth, uh, you know, as of 5, 10 years ago, people are really trying to, to kind of iterate, and innovate, and stand out, um, and we want to make sure that we're giving them all of the tools to be able to do that. So, we're introducing a couple of new, uh, imported malts to the catalog in the next couple of months, um, one of which is a A, uh, German Vienna malt that's produced in Salzgetter in Germany that we're excited about. We're also going to have a Munich malt from them, so two new German varieties that'll be available for the first time in the US, and, uh, we're also bringing, uh, our Croatian malt house, which has the phenomenal name of badass barley malt. Um, they sourced a, uh, Czech, uh, barley varietal called maltz, um, and are malting, uh, what is being known. As, um, Bohemian Rhapsody, uh, Pilsner malt. So we're gonna have a Czech variety here as well. Within the Prairie catalog of all the Canadian malts, we have, uh, a handful of different, um, Pilsner malts that have been doing really well lately. It seems like maybe with the advent of things like West Coast Pilsner, and just people trying to make their IPA stand out, um, there's been kind of a gravitation towards really low color malts, so we've been having a lot of success with Uh, Prairie Select, which is our, our low color, low protein, uh, kind of premium offering, and that's, that's been really getting some great feedback. Sometimes we think to ourselves that we're a little bit crazy, we're like, we have, we have 10 different Pilsner malts in the catalog right now, uh, but it's really nice to have that variety and to have an Australian Pilsner malt, if somebody's doing a, uh, you know, Aussie IPA or something. Something like that or to have one with a name like Badass Bohemian. But
Speaker 1 [05:35] how soon can folks get the new imported malts that you mentioned?
Speaker 2 [05:39] They're all gonna be here, uh, within the next 30 to 45 days. So really soon. We have some samples, uh, at our booth right now and I'm happy to send those out to anybody who might want to visit our website and request one.
Speaker 1 [05:52] Well, Liam, that I think that brings us to the end, but tell folks how they can find Prairie.
Speaker 2 [05:58] Yeah, you can check us out on Instagram at Prairie Malt and also visit our website, which was just completely redone and launched on Monday, prairiemalt.com.
Speaker 1 [06:08] Awesome. Well, thanks for doing this, Liam. Thank you.
